Opponents cite an article from the Chicago Reporter that was immediately debunked, with the claim of Deb Mell taking money from Ed Burke quickly retracted by the reporter. Deb Mell has not taken any donations from Ed Burke.

FACT: MELL has a progressive, independent voting record

Throughout her career, she has never shied away from taking on the establishment and speaking truth to power. She took on the old boys club in Springfield when she led the fight for marriage equality and pushed back against Mayor Emanuel when she voted against the largest property tax increase in Chicago’s history. Deb has championed a wide range of good government reforms while in public office, including fighting back and speaking out when her fellow aldermen tried to limit the investigation into Ed Burke’s corruption.  She has served with honor and integrity her entire career.

FACT: DEb is an Advocate for affordable housing

No alderman has done more to advocate for the cause of affordable housing than Alderman Mell. Her indisputable voting record, list of sponsored legislation and steadfast opposition to aldermanic privilege on affordable housing tells the real story.  The fact is that Deb Mell has cosponsored the most aggressive package of housing reforms and tenant protections that would force developers to spend more money on affordable housing,  prevent slumlords from abusing its residents, and protect our most vulnerable communities, including immigrants, senior citizens, and the homeless.

She has also co-sponsored a number of reforms to a broken TIF system.  As alderman, Deb Mell has prioritized TIF spending on Affordable Housing and Schools.

FACT: DEB HAD NO SAY IN THE GROUP Receiving a Facade Rebate

Silver Properties Group applied for a Facade Rebate Program which is administered through a local economic Special Service Area and our local economic development agency the North River Commission. The alderman has no say in who is accepted and all applicants undergo an extensive screening process.  Every qualifying business can apply and that funding is used to improve the exterior of older buildings in order to attract tenants and revitalize a blighted commercial area. Today the building at Sacramento and Lawrence is home to a locally owned Coffee Shop ( BRU ) and 2nd Story, a non profit that is dedicated to building a more empathetic world through the power of storytelling. Today that corner of Albany Park is thriving like never before.

CLAIM: Deb Mell doesn’t offer help to tenants who are facing eviction.

FACT: DEB always supports tenants facing an eviction

Alderman Mell’s office regularly assists residents who are facing eviction by communicating directly with prop on their behalf. What Deb Mell won’t do is negotiate with fringe groups that have close ties to Rossana’s campaign. These are groups that exploit tenants for political gain.

CLAIM:  Deb Mell has assisted developers with evicting tenants.

FACT: DEb HAS NEVER ASSISTED WITH EVICTIONS AND NEVER WILL

Deb Mell has never assisted with an eviction and she never will. An alderman has absolutely no power to evict tenants and Deb Mell has never granted a zoning change to a developer for the purpose of evicting tenants.
